The Pheasant Conference closed out the 2021 basketball season in April awarding all-conference awards to area boys and girls’teams.
BATTLE LAKE — In a meet at Balmoral Golf Course, the West Central Area boys’ and Otter Tail Central girls’ teams celebrated a meet win Thursday.
The West Central Area track and field teams competed for the first time in nearly two years as they participated in a meet in Melrose. The Knights boys and girls teams each finished third at the meet.
ELBOW LAKE — The West Central Area golf teams hosted Otter Tail Central, Hillcrest, Underwood, Ashby, Rothsay, Pillager and Border West in a home meet Thursday. The Knight boys would come away with a team victory, while the OTC girls’ team captured the girls team title.
HENNING — Despite morning weather, the Otter Tail Central Bulldogs baseball team kicked off their 2021 season Thursday as they hosted the West Central Area Knights. The visiting Knights struck early and closed out with a 5-1 victory.
PERHAM — In a close battle, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars outlasted the West Central Area girls’ basketball team 75-71 Tuesday in the Class A state quarterfinals.
FOLEY — In the Class AA state preliminary round, Fergus Falls wrestler Kaden Hartwell (182 pounds) notched his 151st victory and advanced to the state semifinals at St. Michael-Albertville.
ASHBY — Taking on the 19-0 Ashby boys’ basketball team in the Section 6A playoffs seemed like a tall feat for the visiting West Central Area Knights. But a strong shooting night and even stronger defense, the Knights upset the No. 2 (Class A) Arrows 61-38 Saturday.
BARRETT — The West Central Area girls’ basketball team had two reasons to celebrate Wednesday. The first was a 76-37 victory over Brandon-Evansville in the Section 6A playoffs, while the second was senior Lexi Bright breaking the school’s all-time scoring record as she passed 1,746 points.
The West Central Area boys’ basketball closed out their regular season with a victory and a share of the Pheasant Conference title as the Knights defeated the hosting Hillcrest Comets 63-58.
WHEATON — The West Central Area boys’ basketball team was in a heated defensive battle with the hosting Wheaton Warriors Thursday. After a tight first half, the Knights got the edge to take down their host 47-42.
ALEXANDRIA — The Fergus Falls fans celebrated Otter basketball player Dominic Aguilar Thursday as the senior recorded his 1,000th career point, but the hosting Alexandria Cardinals did not join in the festivities as they picked up a 56-40 Central Lakes Conference win.
PARKERS PRAIRIE — With both teams battling throughout regulation, the West Central Area boys’ basketball team and the hosting Parkers Prairie Panthers would play into overtime. But after the extra session, it would be the visiting Knights that claimed a 57-51 win Tuesday.

The West Central Area girls’ basketball team is coming off a 2019-20 season that saw the Knights go 22-8 and reach the Section 6A finals. In 2021, the Knights return several key components to make another run at a section title.
The West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville wrestling team finished last season with a 19-6 record and sent five wrestlers to the Class A state individual tournament. This year, the team returns a strong nucleus of wrestlers as they pursue Park Region Conference and Section 6A titles.
The Midwest Blue Subdistrict gave out its annual football awards recently as several members of West Central Area/Ashby and Otter Tail Central were recognized.
The West Central Area volleyball team saw two players receive All-Pheasant Conference honors and two other named honorable mention as the conference handed out its end of the season awards.
After falling just short of a Class A state tournament berth in the 2019-20 season, the West Central boys’ basketball team looks to repeat as the Pheasant Conference champion returning four of their top seven scorers for the 2020-21 campaign.
